What is Zoom?
In class lessons at Amieke Online Japanese Language School (Amieke Online), we use “Zoom,” which is a cloud based online meeting system. Amieke Online is a business partner of Zoom and provides you with high quality online Japanese lessons. You do not require an account nor any settings as a participant.
What do we do in online Japanese lessons using Zoom?
- Talking via video-call.
- Sharing the teacher’s presentation, whiteboard, pictures, audio, video or online material, listening to the teacher’s explanation and practicing pronunciation of key words or sentences together with the teacher and other participants.
- The students are able to listen to native speaker’s pronunciation.
- Practice speaking in pairs or groups. Your teacher helps you during practice.
How do you join a Zoom class?
Here is a video demonstration of how to join a Zoom meeting, or see the instructions below.
-
Your teacher will send you a private link by e-mail 12 hours before starting a class at the latest. It will look something like this:
-
Click on the link you have been provided with. Only when entering a Zoom class for the first time from a computer, you will need to download a small application file. Installation process is easy to complete on all commonly used browsers. It is recommended that you click on the link and complete installation in advance, because it takes a few minutes depending on computer speed. The link can be clicked at any time.
Installation will look like this, e.g. in Google Chrome:
It is also recommended that you do a connection test of Zoom before joining your first lesson.
Even after doing a connection test by yourself, you can ask your teacher to do a connection test with you by making a request via e-mail.
-
Just before entering the class you will be prompted to enter a display name. This name is simply to identify you in the class.
-
Then, you will be prompted how you wish to connect. Please select “Join Audio by Computer.”
If joining via computer:
You can also join a Zoom class from your tablet or smartphone, although it is recommended that you join a Zoom class from a computer, because we share various materials during a lesson. It might be too small to see presentations of Japanese characters on a smartphone screen, or it might be too slow to watch online videos on your tablet if it does not have enough storage.
If you would like to join a Zoom class from your tablet or smartphone, you need to download an App beforehand.
For iOS, visit the Apple App Store and search “Zoom.” Click to download.
For Android, visit Google Play and search “Zoom.” Click Install.
What do you need to join a Zoom class?
- A stable internet connection
-
A computer with a web camera, a microphone and headphones or earphones. Or a tablet, or a smartphone. (You will need to see and hear people and they will need to see and hear you.)
A web camera, a microphone and speakers built into the computer are also fine. However, in that case, it is requested that you use headphones, earphones or sound system with howling‐prevention function to prevent howling during the lesson.
For more details on the system requirements, please refer to Zoom Help Center.
